Petrified wood, also called xylophallus, is formed when thousands of trees are buried under wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. The lack of oxygen slows the decomposition of the wood and allows minerals to replace the cell walls and fill the empty spaces in the wood. A process that takes millions of years.
